When I was at my last composition jury one of my professors said to me: you really have a lot of paths you can go down. And I replied that I had become a true master of music.  At the time, that distinction felt like a huge accomplishment, and it is.  After graduating, I decided to build off of one of my favorite projects I completed while in school.  I took a class called Performing with Electronics and was assigned to create a song that included live mixing with my instrument (voice).  I was still recovering from RSV and didn’t feel comfortable singing in front of my peers, so I read through my poems.

I found a poem that I had written back in 2016 where I detailed my experience with sexual assault.  It was moving, painful, and graphic.  I created a piece called Body. I got great reviews from my professors and my peers, so I decided to make a poetry album.

The album creation process has been long, hard and full of learning.  At every turn, I find something that I don’t know and feel less and less like a master of music.  As I’m nearing the end of the creation process, I’m a bit fearful of what is to come, but that’s life isn’t it?

Welcome to my world.

Welcome to who I am.

For the last three years I’ve been telling myself that I need to share my art with the world.  This has been a daunting task for me.  I’ve been happy with the product for quite some time now, however, I found myself procrastinating creating a digital presence for my art.  I constantly asked myself why.  If I’m happy with the product why am I unable to share it with others?

The answer to this took a lot of self reflecting.  As Erykah Badu said “as an artist, I’m sensitive about my shit,” and I felt the same way.  I realized that this was deeper than just procrastination.  It was fear.  Fear of the unknown, fear that no one else will like my work, fear that no one would ever listen.  And honestly, I still have every single one of those fears. But here I am anyway.  This is me, and this is my work. I hope you enjoy.

Love,

Marcea
